Governance Development Programmes and Projects

PDFPrintE-mail

Objectives

In accordance with the mandate given to the Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG), a Governance Development unit was established in 2003 to contribute towards the development of a core of school and community leadership which would then be able to improve the quality of leadership at school as well as within the broader community and beyond the School Governing Body (SGB) term of office.

In order to bring about effective community leadership, MGSLG designed and implented a series of capacity-building programmes. These programmes have been reviewed, revived and repackaged in line with the amendments in the South African Schools' Act No. 84 of 1996 (SASA) and the evaluation reports from facilitator, monitor, participants and research recommendations.

With the generation of Unit Standards by the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) for School Governing Bodies and in meeting the obligations of the National Skills Plan, MGSLG aligned some of its programmes for approval with ETDP SETA. This move is evidence that MGSLg's goal to continuously contribute to the full personal development of the individual and the social and economic development of civil society.

aligning our materials to Unit Standards will not only put MGSLG at a competitive edge in other provinces but will ensure that all governors who wish to have their training accredited, receive national recognition of their acquired skills and knowledge. This encourages life-long learning and promotes skills development for employability and sustainability.

SGB members attending accredited programmes need to decide whether they are doing the course for credit or non-credit purposes. The Unit Standards may form part of qualifications in the field of community development at some point in the future. participants have the option of either receiving a certificate of participation for accredited modules, based on their successful completion of the programme, or of working independently after each unit to complete a portfolio of Evidence (PoE) for credit purposes. The PoE provides evidence of competence which will be assessed for the awarding of NQF credits. an SGB member who achieves the credits will receive a nationally recognised certificate of competence, and his/her credits will be recorded on the National Learner Record Database. (NLRD).
